55 West Ninth Street, o casă de oraș cu o lățime de 22 de picioare, construită în 1840, este situată în inima istorică a West Village, pe o stradă fermecătoare, înconjurată de copaci, dar aproape de absolut tot.

Cu patru etaje (inclusiv un subsol finisat) și finisată în piatră brună cu o restanță clasică, fațada sa a fost restaurată cu meticulozitate de arhitectul Jean-Gabriel Neukomm. Cornisa originală și cărămizile reîntărite au fost păstrate, în timp ce tot cealaltă parte – de la intrare la încadrarea feronerie – a fost recreată cu precizie de meșteșugari de marcă. Fiecare sistem din casă a fost modernizat și îmbunătățit, inclusiv aerul condiționat central, sistemele de sunet și securitate.

Această autenticitate a fațadei a inspirat arhitectura interioară, rezultând un design clasic și modern: luxul francez se îmbină cu șic-ul new-yorkez în detalii precum o piatră de foc Louis XVI, mantale din marmură personalizate, molduri inspirate din stilul beaux-arts, tavane înalte și podele din stejar așezate în chevron, care amintesc de Parisul Haussmann. Scara elegantă și moldurile, bazate pe designul Beaux Arts, ancorează interiorul cu o grandiozitate tăcută.

La nivelul parterului, proporțiile grandioase ale casei sunt evidente. Livingul este atât impunător, cât și primitor. Tavanele înalte, feroneria generoasă și moldurile din stilul beaux-arts, cercetate cu meticulozitate, conferă spațiului o atmosferă fără timp, în timp ce podelele din stejar așezate în chevron aduc căldură și textură.

Aproape de living se află biblioteca, cu o terasă fermecătoare care dă spre grădina amenajată de dedesubt. Biblioteca și livingul se completează armonios, oferind o senzație de spațiu foarte mare pentru petreceri, sau două spații mai intime. Frumoasa piatră de foc cu lemne din bibliotecă, dotată cu o mantă fin sculptată Louis XVI, conferă camerei o senzație de gravitate. Chiar lângă bibliotecă se află o fermecătoare cameră de citit care se deschide spre terasă.

Etajul superior este rezervat în întregime pentru luxosul apartament principal, conceput ca un refugiu privat. Baia din marmură iluminată de cer, inspirată de interioarele rafinate ale lui Paul Dupré-Lafon, este un punct arhitectural de referință. Dormitorul are o piatră de foc pe gaz care funcționează și o frumoasă zonă de șezlong. Există două dulapuri foarte mari, amenajate cu grijă.

În plus față de apartamentul principal de la etajul superior, casa de oraș oferă două dormitoare secundare mari, precum și două dormitoare mai mici la etajul III. Generos dimensionate și umplute cu lumină naturală, aceste camere sunt frumos decorate acum, dar permit și flexibilitate în utilizare. În prezent, există o baie mare la acest etaj, dar se poate adăuga ușor alta.

La nivelul grădinii se află un alt dormitor frumos, cu o baie completă, un toaleta și o bucătărie impresionantă, proiectată pentru bucătari, care include un spațiu pentru luat masa. O parte a bucătăriei este ancorată de un perete dramatic de 30 de picioare, format din dulapuri de înălțime completă/depozitare ascunsă, care permite peretelui opus, acoperit cu o marmură Calacatta gold continuă, să rămână vizibil neîntrerupt. Efectul este liniștitor și sculptural: o bucătărie care se simte mai puțin ca o declarație arhitecturală, dar funcționează bine. La mijloc, cuptorul Lacanche atrage atenția. Fabricat manual în Burgundia și acoperit cu email și oțel inoxidabil, oferă o funcționalitate de nivel profesional cu o prezență care se simte atemporală. O masă mare de fermă este centrul bucătăriei, cu un spațiu de șezlong pentru familie la capătul grădinii din cameră.

Subsolul finisat este la fel de frumos ca restul casei și dispune de o wonderful lavandă, precum și de depozitare extinsă.

Dincolo de interior, Miranda Brooks a proiectat o grădină pe două niveluri. Terasa de dining se deschide cu o masă și scaune inspirate de Donald Judd, în timp ce partea din spate ridicată amintește de grădinile Palais Royal, complet cu coloane din buxus, pietriș alb, garduri din alun împletit, și copaci Judas tăiați care înfloresc în roz în fiecare primăvară.

55 West 9th oferă un nivel de detaliu și calitate în construcție care este aproape imposibil de găsit. Este șic, distractiv și cool, în timp ce este, de asemenea, vesel, însorit și practic. Locația și casa sunt perfecte.

55 West Ninth Street, a 22 feet wide townhouse built in 1840, is located in the heart of the historic West Village on a charming tree lined street but close to absolutely everything.

Four-stories tall (with a finished basement in addition) and trimmed in brownstone with classical restraint, its façade was meticulously restored by architect Jean-Gabriel Neukomm. The original cornice and repointed bricks remain, while everything else—from the stoop to the window surrounds—was recreated with precision by master craftsmen. Every system in the house has been modernized and upgraded, including central AC, sound and security systems.

That authenticity of the facade inspired the interior architecture, resulting in classical and modern design: French luxury meets New York chic in details such as a Louis XVI fireplace, bespoke marble mantels, beaux-arts–inspired moldings, high ceilings throughout and chevron-laid oak floors reminiscent of Haussmann’s Paris. The sweeping staircase and moldings, based on Beaux Arts design, anchor the interiors with quiet grandeur.

At the parlor level, the home’s grand proportions are evident. The living room is both stately and inviting. High ceilings, generous windows, and meticulously researched beaux-arts moldings give the space a timeless athmopshere, while chevron-laid oak floors contribute warmth and texture.

Adjacent to the living room is the library with a charming terrace overlooking the landscaped garden below. The library and living room flow gracefully allowing for the feeling of a very large entertaining space, or two more intimate spaces. The library's beautiful wood-burning fireplace with a finely carved Louis XVI mantel gives the room a sense of gravitas. Just off the library is a charming reading room which opens to the terrace.

The top floor is reserved entirely for the luxurious primary suite, conceived as a private retreat. The skylit marble bathroom, inspired by Paul Dupré-Lafon’s refined interiors, is an architectural centerpiece. The bedroom has a working gas fireplace and a lovely sitting area. There are two very large, beautifully fitted out closets.

In addition to the top-floor primary suite, the townhouse offers two large secondary bedrooms as well as two smaller bedrooms on the 3rd floor. Generously scaled and filled with natural light, these rooms are beautifully decorated now, but also allow for flexibility of use. Currently there is one large bathroom on this floor, but another can easily be added.

On the garden level is an additional lovely bedroom with a full bath, a powder room and an impressively designed chef's eat-in kitchen. One side of the kitchen is anchored by a dramatic, 30-foot wall of full-height cabinetry/concealed storage that allows the opposite wall, clad in a continuous sweep of Calacatta gold marble, to remain strikingly unbroken. The effect is serene and sculptural: a kitchen that feels less like an architectural statement but also functions well. At its center, the Lacanche range commands attention. Handcrafted in Burgundy and clad in enamel and stainless steel, it offers professional-grade function with a presence that feels timeless. A large farmhouse table is the center of the kitchen with a family room sitting area at the garden end of the room.

The finished basement is as nice as the rest of the house and has a wonderful laundry as well as extensive storage.

Beyond the interior, Miranda Brooks has designed a two-tiered garden. The dining terrace opens with a Donald Judd–inspired table and chairs, while the raised rear recalls the gardens of the Palais Royal, complete with boxwood columns, white gravel, woven hazel fencing, and pleached Judas trees that burst into pink bloom each spring.

55 West 9th provides a level of detail and quality in construction that is next to impossible to find. It is chic and fun and cool while also being cheerful and sunny and practical. The location and the house are perfection.
