Welcome to The Artist’s Enclave, a rare top-floor one-bedroom condo with nearly two centuries of New York history.
Then: In 1932, a 20-year-old Jackson Pollock moved into 46 Carmine, with his brother Charles while they studied under Thomas Hart Benton. This was Pollock’s home and studio before he became Pollock: young, experimenting, and still finding his way.
Now: After generations of owners, the home has been carefully updated, preserving the character and eccentricities that have always defined it.
On the top floor of an 1827 Federal-style townhouse between Bedford and Bleecker, this home sits just above the surrounding low-rise buildings. Inside, it feels like an urban treehouse, with treetop outlooks and light pouring in through the skylights. Fourteen-foot ceilings, exposed beams, and a thoughtful renovation give the home a sense of openness and character, while split-system air conditioning and hidden storage throughout add modern functionality. The kitchen is both functional and beautifully updated with new appliances, while the thoughtfully renovated bathroom brings a fresh, contemporary feel. The bedroom offers a generous walk-in closet, and upstairs, a loft makes an ideal studio, home office, or creative retreat. A decorative fireplace and exposed brick bring warmth and history to the living area. Out back, a shared garden with a grill offers a quiet patch of green tucked away from the city.
Like the Village itself, 46 Carmine has been reinventing itself for nearly 200 years. A milliner sold hats and bonnets downstairs in the 1850s, artists lived and worked here in the 1930s, and in 2010, the building was landmarked as part of the Greenwich Village Historic District. Its latest renovation continues that tradition by layering contemporary design over the home's original materials.
Outside your door, the West Village remains one of New York’s great creative neighborhoods. Within a few blocks are some of the city’s most iconic jazz clubs, comedy venues, indie theaters and cinemas, and restaurants that have helped make the Village a destination for generations.
Pollock came here to figure out who he was going to be. The neighborhood is still very good at that.
