On the ninth floor of the landmarked Rockefeller Apartments, Residence 9C is a sun-filled one-bedroom with southern exposure over the Museum of Modern Art's sculpture garden, framed by the building's signature curved bay window and a decorative fireplace.
A proper entry gallery opens to a broad living and dining room, where the bay window draws in southern light and creates a natural dining or sitting area overlooking the garden. Herringbone hardwood floors run throughout, while a prior renovation by Mojo Stumer introduced custom built-ins, pocket doors, and concealed storage. Just off the living space, the windowed galley kitchen includes a walk-in pantry, dark stone countertops, Sub-Zero refrigeration, gas cooking, and a breakfast bar for two.
The bedroom is set apart from the entertaining space down a dressing hall lined with three oversized closets and enjoys the same southern exposure. The bath is finished in black-and-white checkerboard tile, with a stone-topped vanity and glass-enclosed soaking tub and shower. Newer windows and through-wall heating and air-conditioning add everyday comfort.
The Rockefeller Apartments is a designated New York City landmark built in 1935-37 and designed by Wallace K. Harrison and J. André Fouilhoux in the International Style. Commissioned by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Nelson Rockefeller, its two buildings at 17 West 54th Street and 24 West 55th Street were conceived around light, air, and a landscaped private interior garden. A building-wide capital improvement program is underway, with plans including a renovated lobby, a new fitness center, upgraded laundry facilities, and broader infrastructure and exterior improvements. Shareholders may also install an in-apartment washer/dryer with Board approval under a recently adopted building policy.
