55 West Ninth Street, yon kay etwat an ranje ki mezire 22 pye nan lajè e ki te bati an 1840, sitiye nan kè istorik West Village la, sou yon bèl ri ki gen pye bwa sou toude bò li, men ki toupre absoliman tout bagay.
Kay la gen kat etaj (ak yon sousòl fini anplis) epi li kouvri ak brownstone nan yon stil klasik ki rete sob. Achitèk Jean-Gabriel Neukomm te restore fasad li avèk anpil presizyon. Kònis orijinal la ak brik yo ki te repwent rete an plas, pandan tout lòt bagay—soti nan eskalye devan an rive nan ankadreman fenèt yo—te rekonstwi avèk presizyon pa atizan mèt yo.
Gwo eskalye a ansanm ak moulaj yo, ki baze sou konsepsyon Beaux-Arts, bay enteryè yo yon grandè trankil.
Nan nivo salon an, gwo pwopòsyon kay la parèt klèman. Salon an gen yon aparans majeste, men li akeyan tou. Plafon wo, gwo fenèt ak moulaj Beaux-Arts ki te etidye epi repwodui avèk anpil presizyon bay espas la yon atmosfè ki pa janm demode, pandan planche an pye bwadchenn ki poze an chevron yo ajoute chalè ak teksti.
Akote salon an gen bibliyotèk la, ki gen yon bèl teras ki bay sou jaden amenaje ki anba a. Bibliyotèk la ak salon an konekte avèk elegans, sa ki pèmèt espas la sèvi swa kòm yon gwo espas pou resevwa envite, swa kòm de espas ki pi entim. Bèl chemine bibliyotèk la ki boule bwa, ak yon mantèl Louis XVI ki gen skiltaj delika, bay chanm nan yon sans gravite. Jis deyò bibliyotèk la gen yon bèl sal lekti ki louvri sou teras la.
Tout etaj anlè a rezève nèt pou suite mèt kay la, ki te konsevwa tankou yon retrè prive ak liks. Twalèt an mab la, ki jwenn limyè li nan yon fenèt plafon epi ki enspire nan enteryè rafine Paul Dupré-Lafon yo, se yon pyès santral achitekti a. Chanm nan gen yon chemine gaz ki fonksyone ak yon bèl ti espas pou chita. Gen de gwo pandri ki byen ekipe.
Anplis suite mèt kay la nan etaj anlè a, kay la ofri de gwo chanm segondè ansanm ak de chanm ki pi piti nan twazyèm etaj la. Chanm sa yo laj, yo plen ak limyè natirèl epi yo dekore avèk anpil gou; men yo pèmèt tou yon itilizasyon fleksib. Kounye a gen yon gwo twalèt nan etaj sa a, men li ta fasil pou ajoute yon lòt.
Nan nivo jaden an gen yon lòt bèl chanm ak twalèt konplè, yon twalèt pou envite ak yon kwizin chèf ki fèt avèk anpil atansyon epi ki gen espas pou manje ladan l. Yon bò kwizin nan apiye sou yon miray dramatik ki mezire 30 pye, avèk kabinèt ki rive soti atè rive nan plafon ak espas depo kache; sa pèmèt miray opoze a, ki kouvri ak yon sèl kontinyèl sifas mab Calacatta Gold, rete frapan san okenn entèripsyon. Efè a trankil epi eskiltiral: yon kwizin ki pa sèlman sanble ak yon deklarasyon achitekti, men ki fonksyone trè byen tou. Nan sant li, fou Lacanche la atire tout atansyon. Li fabrike alamen nan Bourgogne epi li kouvri ak emay ak asye pur; li ofri fonksyonalite yon kwizin pwofesyonèl, ak yon prezans ki pa janm demode. Yon gwo tab fèm se sant kwizin nan, epi nan pwent ki bay sou jaden an gen yon espas salon pou fanmi an.
Sousòl la, ki fini, bèl menm jan ak rès kay la. Li gen yon bèl sal lesiv ansanm ak anpil espas depo.
Pi lwen pase enteryè a, Miranda Brooks te desine yon jaden sou de nivo. Teras kote yo manje a louvri sou yon tab ak chèz ki enspire nan travay Donald Judd, pandan pati ki leve nan dèyè a raple jaden Palais Royal yo, ak kolòn bwatou, gravye blan, kloti an branch hazèl tise ak pye Jida yo ki fòme avèk swen epi ki eklate an flè woz chak prentan.
55 West 9th ofri yon nivo detay ak kalite konstriksyon ki prèske enposib pou jwenn. Li alamòd, amizan epi fre, pandan li rete jwaye, klere ak pratik tou. Kote a ak kay la pafè.
55 West Ninth Street, a 22 feet wide townhouse built in 1840, is located in the heart of the historic West Village on a charming tree lined street but close to absolutely everything.
Four-stories tall (with a finished basement in addition) and trimmed in brownstone with classical restraint, its façade was meticulously restored by architect Jean-Gabriel Neukomm. The original cornice and repointed bricks remain, while everything else—from the stoop to the window surrounds—was recreated with precision by master craftsmen. Every system in the house has been modernized and upgraded, including central AC, sound and security systems.
That authenticity of the facade inspired the interior architecture, resulting in classical and modern design: French luxury meets New York chic in details such as a Louis XVI fireplace, bespoke marble mantels, beaux-arts–inspired moldings, high ceilings throughout and chevron-laid oak floors reminiscent of Haussmann’s Paris. The sweeping staircase and moldings, based on Beaux Arts design, anchor the interiors with quiet grandeur.
At the parlor level, the home’s grand proportions are evident. The living room is both stately and inviting. High ceilings, generous windows, and meticulously researched beaux-arts moldings give the space a timeless athmopshere, while chevron-laid oak floors contribute warmth and texture.
Adjacent to the living room is the library with a charming terrace overlooking the landscaped garden below. The library and living room flow gracefully allowing for the feeling of a very large entertaining space, or two more intimate spaces. The library's beautiful wood-burning fireplace with a finely carved Louis XVI mantel gives the room a sense of gravitas. Just off the library is a charming reading room which opens to the terrace.
The top floor is reserved entirely for the luxurious primary suite, conceived as a private retreat. The skylit marble bathroom, inspired by Paul Dupré-Lafon’s refined interiors, is an architectural centerpiece. The bedroom has a working gas fireplace and a lovely sitting area. There are two very large, beautifully fitted out closets.
In addition to the top-floor primary suite, the townhouse offers two large secondary bedrooms as well as two smaller bedrooms on the 3rd floor. Generously scaled and filled with natural light, these rooms are beautifully decorated now, but also allow for flexibility of use. Currently there is one large bathroom on this floor, but another can easily be added.
On the garden level is an additional lovely bedroom with a full bath, a powder room and an impressively designed chef's eat-in kitchen. One side of the kitchen is anchored by a dramatic, 30-foot wall of full-height cabinetry/concealed storage that allows the opposite wall, clad in a continuous sweep of Calacatta gold marble, to remain strikingly unbroken. The effect is serene and sculptural: a kitchen that feels less like an architectural statement but also functions well. At its center, the Lacanche range commands attention. Handcrafted in Burgundy and clad in enamel and stainless steel, it offers professional-grade function with a presence that feels timeless. A large farmhouse table is the center of the kitchen with a family room sitting area at the garden end of the room.
The finished basement is as nice as the rest of the house and has a wonderful laundry as well as extensive storage.
Beyond the interior, Miranda Brooks has designed a two-tiered garden. The dining terrace opens with a Donald Judd–inspired table and chairs, while the raised rear recalls the gardens of the Palais Royal, complete with boxwood columns, white gravel, woven hazel fencing, and pleached Judas trees that burst into pink bloom each spring.
55 West 9th provides a level of detail and quality in construction that is next to impossible to find. It is chic and fun and cool while also being cheerful and sunny and practical. The location and the house are perfection.
